Fun Things to do with Your Pet while at Home

With the current shelter-in-place order, our schedules and our pet’s routines have been significantly impacted.  Our daily routines have changed and many are working from home as much as able.  Our pets have definitely noticed the change.  This is a good opportunity to spend some extra time with our pets doing new things that we may not otherwise find the time for.  Here are several ideas we came up with.

Keep a Routine in Place

Our pets like routine and may have a hard time adjusting to frequent changes. Try to keep their daily routine of mealtime and playtime in place.  Don’t flex or feed them more just because you are home more often. Not only does this schedule help your pet, but keeping a routine while staying at home will also help you feel less anxious and reduce your stress.

Take a Walk

Being home all day with your dog is a good motivation to take a break from your work or task to take a walk and get exercise. It’s good for you and your dog.

For shorter breaks, play a game of fetch to get their energy out so they can nap until your next break time.

If you’re looking to get out and see more of the spring flowers, Gibbs Gardens has 300 Acres of beautiful gardens and multilevel walkways.  They are open and with the spacious grounds, it is not difficult to maintain 6 feet of social distancing.  Make sure to check before making the trip that there haven’t been any changes to their operations.

Teach Your Pet a New Trick

There are lots of tricks you can teach your pet while at home more than usual.  The sunshine has been out quite a bit, but we get a spring rain in Atlanta.  These are perfect days to play inside with your pet.

Use healthy treats and teach your dog to Kiss on Command! You’ll both love the kisses but try not to have too many long sessions – you don’t want to over-treat!

You can also try to hide the treat. This can be done with dogs and also cats. Hide your cat’s treat and use a pointer to lure them to it and watch them as they discover the yummy hidden treat!
